A Study on the Side Effects of the Anticonvulsants


Abstract
The side effects among the 178 epileptics, who have taken anticonvulsants through the Seoul National University Hospital were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups, one Diphenylhydantoin group and the other (Diphenylhydantoin+Phenobarbital) group and the general incidences of side effects were surveyed and the each side effect was compared between the two groups.
1) The most frequent side effect was drowsiness, (25.8%), the next was gastrointestinal symptom (21.9%) and the 3rd. was gingival hyperplasia (14.0%). The drowsiness and dizziness were more frequent trend in (DPH+Pb) group.
2) In sexual incidence, the gastrointestinal symptom was significantly more frequent in male and the same phenomenon was found in (DPH+Pb) group.
3) From the view point of age, the peripheral neuropathy appeared significantly more frequently with increasing age and the same result was found in (DPH+Pb) group.
4) The longer the duration of treatment, the more significantly frequent side effect was gingival hyperplasia and the same result was found in (DPH+Pb) group.
5) With the increase of dose, diplopia appeared more frequently and significantly, but in the two subgroups the incidence of any side effect was not significantly related with the increase of dose in the range of therapeutic dose.
